Leave, Adapt, Resist – Time to rethink Academic Twitter?

  1. Elon Musk has not purchased Twitter. In any case social media platforms have come and gone over the last couple of decades, since the Internet went mainstream. You should not become dependent on one, retaining an archive of your content, and being able to distribute it across multiple platforms. Professionals need to be in control over what they post to social media, and the personal, as well as professional risks with any platform. The approach I take is to post to my own blog https://highereducationwhisperer.com/ which I own the domain name of, and have full control over. I then post a summary and links to whatever social media platforms are current. I can’t control what happens to my content on those platforms, but I can revise the original on my blog. Keep in mind it is not just the social media companies you have to worry about controlling your material, it is also the academic institutions you are associated with.
